Special Practice Responsibilities
After graduating from the University of Cape Town in 1976, five years of experience was gained in clinical disciplines including anaesthetics, paediatrics, medicine and general practice. Pathology training was undertaken at the Grootte Schuur and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals specialising in Chemical Pathology and working closely with the Endocrine and Genetic Research groups at the University of Cape Town Medical School. After two years in a private pathology practice in Natal, South Africa, Guy immigrated in 1990 with his family to New Zealand to take up the position of Pathologist-in-Charge, Napier Hospital Laboratory. In 1994 he joined Medlab South and was intimately involved in the merging of the biochemistry and immunology departments to achieve efficiencies in the handling of serum samples. Special interests include endocrinology testing incorporating thyroid pathology and diabetes. Close links with the endocrinology and diabetes clinicians in Christchurch have been developed. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Christchurch School of Medicine, University of Otago. Other teaching duties include seminars on biochemical aspects of laboratory medicine primarily to general practitioners. Seminar presentations and laboratory visits are undertaken to most centres in the South Island. He has publications in peer reviewed journals on topics such as thyroid tests, enzymology, myeloma and hyponatremia in endurance events. Extramural activities have included challenges such as the Coast to Coast event and recently the 60km Kepler mountain run.
