An Otago graduate, Dr Pettit began his career as a house surgeon and registrar at Dunedin Hospital. Following five years training at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, academic positions at the University of Calgary and the Royal Free Hospital preceded a return to Otago University and Dunedin Hospital.
During his time in Dunedin Hospital as head of the Department of Haematology he also served as Chairman of the Division of Ancillary Services (1983-1985) and was also a member of the executive of the Cancer Society of New Zealand, Otago Division.
He has co-authored, with Professor Victor Hoffbrand, three major books (Essential Haematology, Clinical Haematology and The Sandoz and Novartis Atlases of Haematology – in total 35 editions in 12 languages). Past research activity translated into extensive contributions in scientific journals. He served as a member of the editorial board of the British Journal of Haematology and as secretary of the Isotope Panel of the International Society of Haematology. A past president of the New Zealand Society for Haematology, he was also for many years NZ Councillor for the International Society of Haematology.
