Special Practice Responsibilities
After completing her undergraduate medical degree (1980) through Otago University and her FRCPA (1986) in anatomical pathology in the Auckland Hospitals’ Registrar training scheme, Dr Sage worked in various positions in both the public and private sectors in the Auckland region. In 1994 she completed a one-year postgraduate training programme in cytology at the Victorian Cytology Service in Melbourne. This was followed by an appointment in cytopathology at Greenlane/Auckland Hospitals, and more recently a part time position in cytopathology at Medlab South in Christchurch, following a move to Christchurch in 2001. Dr Sage has a specialised interest in cytology, particularly gynaecological cytology. She has been closely involved with the development of gynaecological cytology in New Zealand, particularly since the Gisborne inquiry in 2000/1, serving on a number of committees and advisory groups with the National Cervical Screening Programme. She has also played a lead role in developing on-going education programmes for both pathologists and technical staff working in gynaecological cytology in New Zealand and is continuing to be active in this area, with her current involvement with the National Gynae Cytology Training Service.
