Dr Rosemary Ikram

Special Practice Responsibilities
Rosemary graduated from London University, England (Charing Cross Hospital Medical School) in 1972. She served as House Surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital. She started her pathology training at Charing Cross before moving to Christchurch in 1974.
From 1975-1980, she worked in several primary healthcare roles including general practice, family planning and as medical officer for the Ministry of Defence. In 1981 she was appointed as a pathology registrar in the Department of Pathology, Christchurch Hospital. She qualified as a pathologist specialising in Microbiology in 1986 and is registered as a specialist pathologist on the NZ Medical Register.
While in hospital practice she was a member of the Infection Control Committee and Drug Committee as well as assisting with the design of the bone marrow transplant unit.
In 1991 Dr Ikram took up the position of Clinical Microbiologist at Medlab South. During her time in this position she has developed interests in improving the quality of laboratory testing both within the laboratory as well as working with referrer groups on Best Practice ordering. This interest includes projects to evaluate strategies to improve patient outcomes.
Currently Dr Ikram is the pathologist responsible for Quality and Health and Safety at Medlab South Ltd.
The Infection Control service was started in 1992 and is recognised nationwide. Dr Ikram is an advisor to the Ministry of Health in a variety of areas including antibiotic resistance, SARS and infectious diseases.
The management and development of technical staff remains a key interest. Students have studied in her laboratory for the Diploma of Medical Laboratory Science and Master of Medical Laboratory Science with Rosemary as one of the supervisors.
Her publications cover a wide range of hospital and community topics.
