Dr Shona McDowell

Dr McDowell graduated MBChB from Otago Medical School, Otago University, in 1989. She spent two years as a House Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital and began her pathology training there in 1992. She gained her fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Pathology, FRCPA, in 1996 and was awarded the Neil Prentice Memorial Prize in the course of her training. Dr McDowell joined Medlab South in Christchurch as a consultant anatomical pathologist in 1997.
Since 2001 she has also been employed as a consultant dermatopathologist by Canterbury Health Laboratories on a locum basis. She has been head of the histology department at Medlab South since January 2005. Dr McDowell works in the fields of histopathology and non-gynaecological cytology and has special interests in dermatopathology, urological pathology and breast pathology.
